HorseOst was set up by Tony Nevin BSc (Hons) Ost, DO to focus more than 29 years of treating all types of horse, pony, and donkey with osteopathy. Working with vets to create treatment programmes specifically for each individual patient. Unlike many animal therapists Tony believes the only truly effective way of providing proper care is to work within a multi disciplinary practice. This is the ethos behind Horse Ost. Bringing all that is great from the osteopathic profession and combining it with the very best from the equine veterinary world.
HorseOst, through Tony, has built up a strong working relationship with other allied professions including farriery, saddlery, physiotherapists, and chiropractors. We only work with vets, not just through referral of patients, but in providing the in depth level of care needed to sustain, and maintain real improvements in the way horses can move, especially with cases where there is a long history of problems.
Obviously we cannot fix everything, but we do have long term data showing that we radically improve 8 out of 10 long standing, chronic cases of neck and back problems where there is no evidence of any underlying pathology. In many of these cases all other forms of help have been unsuccessful.
By working within a structured team to treat each patient, we look at every aspect that will affect or impede normal movement. This involves our vet looking at the teeth. Assessment of the feet and shoeing, along with saddle fit in relation to how the horse moves before treatment are essential parts of the programme. Many of these factors alter as a horse receives osteopathic treatment. Therefore it is essential that everyone who is involved in a patient's care, and general wellbeing, along with trainers and riders are brought onboard. Only by working together can we achieve the long term results that are attainable.
HorseOst take on referred patients through referral centres based within existing equine veterinary practices. They provide each patient with the facility of having a vet and osteopath working together, along with a veterinary nurse to assist, especially with chronic cases that benefit from treatment using standing sedation.
Where possible we like a referring practice to have carried out any radiographs, and blood tests, however if for any reason these are unavailable we have the facilities onsite to carry these out. Through at least one of our centres we have access to scintigraphy, ultra sound, infra red thermography, endoscopy, and high speed video to further assist our diagnosis and predicted treatment prognosis.
We can offer individuals, teams, or clubs support packages to improve strength and stamina of your horses, and reduce avoidable injury due to poor core strength. By introducing preventative measures we can help you to achieve more consistent levels of fitness and stamina in your equine athletes. Training is provided on site for maximum effect, with on-going support throughout the season. Please e-mail us to outline your specific needs.
